Joe's Place

Selfies

I was there, but I don't need to be on every page... do I?
Well, maybe, but still...
Anyway, here's an assortment to show some of the places I've been in the last few years.
They're all mixed up, but that's life, I guess.
Wish I could take some of you with me.

Jump!
You know you want to!

Live now or forever hold your peace.
There will be enough time to rest when you're dead!

"Selfies" by Jou Baur

This movie is made from some of the photos below and lots more, too.
It showcases some of the things I've done since I got out of prison in 2005 and started rebuilding my life; or should I say 'building my life,' since there was no normal life before that.
I took most, but not all of the photos in this, including many taken with a tripod or setting the camera on a rock or something.

Feather Falls

It would have been nice if there was more rain recently, but I guess some water is better than none after driving 200 miles and walking 6-7 more to get here.
At least this trip the Falls parking area was open.
So was camping... which was free!

McWay Falls, along the Big Sur coast, (with Devonne.)

You can't get down there, too bad.
Sure is pretty though.
There used to be a house just off to my right and this was the view out of their bedroom window.

Alamere Falls in Point Reyes National Seashore in Marin

It's about 40 feet down this ravine to the beach.
I didn't want to break my leg so I walked 1-1/2 miles up the beach to Wildcat camp and came back down the beach to see the falls from below.
Then another 3 miles round trip to return to here, turning a 9 mile trip into a 15 mile trip.
Good thing I like to walk, huh?

Brian's Bass Lake Pics

I love this pic.
"I'm telling you that this is the very best 'Toilet-Paper-plant' there is."
(I've never actually used it myself, I've only heard about it from others.)
My buddy Brian actually took this pic of me, although the pose was my idea and freaked him out.

Big Basin, one of my first trips to Berry Creek Falls

This photo was taken with an early disposable digital camera or cell-phone years ago.
It was better than nothing.

This is one of my favorite pictures of me, but I didn't take it myself.
Does that still make it a selfie?

Yosemite Valley from atop Sentinel Dome on the Glacier Point trip

You're looking back towards the tunnel in this view, except we're up above instead of down in the valley.
It makes for some really nice Half Dome pics, being up at the same level instead of looking up at it.
Sentinel Dome is on the Glacier Point Road and is only about a mile from the highway, round-trip.
Plus, its only about 200' elevation gain yet look at the view it gives you!

Half Dome, from over on Glacier Point

This is a great selfie, well framed with an awesome background.
You have Half Dome, Liberty Cap, and both Vernal Falls and Nevada Falls.
This was taken from up on the Glacier Point route.

Nice little walk.
It's all flatland, though.

The Labyrinth

The Labyrinth is in the NW corner of SF.
Park in the Lands End parking lot and take the trail towards the Golden Gate Bridge.
Where the stairs go downhill tot he left, go on down.

This trip to the Labyrinth I took Bill Carpenter with me.
It was a foggy day, and quite nice out.

Hawk Camp

Free camping, 3 days per year, right across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco.
It is a 2-1/2 mile walk and you have to carry your own water.
No fires allowed.
There are some cool Golden Gate Hikes here, especially if you don't have to get up early to drive here and find parking.
There's also some camping down below at Kirby Cove, but I haven't been there yet.

Yosemite 2011

This was my first trip to Yosemite, and I heard that the falls had more water than the last 30 years.
The breeze here is so strong from the waterfall that it's like being in a wind tunnel with rain.

My second trip

(Below)
This trip I started up the Yosemite Falls trail.
I didn't get to finish, though.
I ran out of time.
I had to be at the campground at 3 pm in order to maybe get a campsite from a no-show.
I didn't get it so I went to Brian's place in Madera for the night.

Here I am part way up the trail.

This is about a month after my first trip with Brian and Sandi, (see above.)
This time I came alone and brought my bike.
I really enjoyed riding my bike around the valley there.

As you can see, Yosemite Falls is already much smaller than one month ago.
Yosemite Falls itself is rain-fed only, unlike some of the other falls there.

One Year Later!

(Below)

Yosemite Falls sure is dry!

It's about a month after the Glacier Point trip and I'm back in Yosemite Valley.
Here's Yosemite Falls and boy is it dry!
Compare it with the picture above from 13 months earlier.

Muir Woods

Nice, but a little too tame for me.
Everything is fenced off.
I hear there are some better paths back further but I didn't discover them this time.
Still, that's an awful nice Redwood there.
You could live inside that.

Yosemite, again

Yosemite Valley on my first trip to Feather Falls.
Feather Falls was closed, so I camped illegally nearby, and about 3 am I jumped up and went to Yosemite instead.
Feather Falls is up north near Lake Oroville.
This shot is way on down the Merced River from the main part of the valley.

O'Roarke's Bench

This is up on the side of Mt. Tam in Marin.
In the background you can see Stinson Beach and Bolinas.
Bolinas is famous for refusing to allow a sign pointing the way.
CalTrans will no longer install signs since the longest lasting one on record lasted 36 hours.
