Joe's Place

Feather Falls

Feather Falls is a really nice hike up near Lake Oroville.
The falls are 410' although there are old claims of it being 640'.
In fact 640' is the number given on the sign when I was there, but I've heard it has been remeasured at the lower number.

The falls are on the Fall River which is a tributary of the Middle Fork Feather River in the Plumas National Forest.

There is camping at the trailhead and when I was there it was free.
Be sure to use Bear-Proof food storage.
.
This is a 9 mile round-trip hike.
Be sure to take plenty of water and food, make a day of it.

Directions: (Copied from Google maps.)

Take CA-162 E
6.6 mi
Turn right onto Forbestown Rd
6.2 mi
Turn left onto Lumpkin Rd
11.0 mi
Turn left onto Bryant Ravine Rd
1.7 mi

The Hike:

The trails were well maintained and marked.
This is a 9 mile round-trip hike.
The upper part of the trail (4.5 miles) is moderate whereas the lower part (3.5) is strenuous.

The trail drops from 2,460' to 1600' for a loss of 860' going in!
This means an 860' gain on your way out.

About 1/4 mile in the trail forks.
The left one is shorter and steeper, the right one is longer and gentler.
If you want to do them both I recommend taking the shorter, steeper one on the way in and the gentler, shallower one on the way out.
It should take you 4-5 hours.

Be sure to take plenty of water and food.
