Eagle Rock LookoutThis video is from my first trip to Eagle Rock Lookout.
I started real early and was walking and filming at the same time. I didn't realize for a while that it was so dark nothing was showing up on the camera screen. It was kinda funny that I mentioned "getting lost" while I was going in and filming because I actually did get lost on the way out! Well, not exactly. It was dark on the way in as you can see, and I didn't see the path quite clearly. Coming out I missed a turn and came out 1/4 mile up the road past the HP Gate. It was pretty funny when I looked over this cliff and saw a road 10' below me when there hadn't been one there on the way in. I figured out pretty quick where I had to be and got back to the car easily enough, but it did make for a humorous addition to the video. I have since made several trips there and enjoyed every one. I often use it for an easy trip for newbies, although Flag HIll is better for that. There are more photo's from several different trips on the photo page. Be sure to enjoy them. Jou Baur |
Directions:Heading towards Santa Cruz on Hwy 17, exit at Bear Creek Road.
Head west towards Boulder Creek. When you reach Hwy 9 in Boulder Creek, turn left one block, and then right at the stop sign. Head out of town towards Big Basin State Park on hwy 236. Take a left turn at Little Basin Road at the 6.5 mile marker. Drive about a mile until you come to the HP Gate, now called the Little Basin gate. Park where you won't block traffic. There is a private road, (dirt,) cutting off to the left. Walk about 100' up it to the trail head on the right. The Hike:WARNING: This is not a maintained trail.
It does not have lots of signs, like more well-used trails, however it is mostly pretty easy to follow. There are no turnoffs, except for one about 20' long, with a view. When you get to the fire road, turn left. A couple hundred yards and you are there. Eagle Rock to the right and the old abandoned fire lookout to the left. Just a nice, short morning hike. This path is under 4 miles round-trip with about 1,000' elevation gain, topping out at 2,421'. |
