Joe's Place

Mitchell Canyon / Eagle Peak Loop

This is a really nice hike, although quite open to the sun, so you may not want to do it on a sunny day.
It starts out in the meadows at the end of Mitchell Canyon road and goes up into the hills along Mitchell Canyon.

After about 1/2 mile of hiking and a climb of about 400 feet you get to Mitchell Rock. Mitchell Rock is a nice outcrop with a great view of the canyon and a nice resting place for a moment.

Shortly after you pass the Twin Peaks you will connect to Eagle Peak trail. Turn right onto it and continue almost another mile to Eagle Peak. At 2,369 feet, you have gained about 1,700 feet, and should feel pretty good.

Directions:

From I-680 and Walnut Creek, drive out Ygnacio Valley Road 7.6 miles.

Turn right onto Clayton Road and drive to 1 mile to Mitchell Canyon road.

Turn right onto Mitchell Canyon Road and go 1.6 miles to the Mt. Diablo State Park parking area, ($6.)

The Hike

Exit the south end of the Mt. Diablo State Park parking lot onto the Mitchell Canyon Fire Road.

Turn left immediately onto Oak Road and go about 0.1 miles.

Turn right onto Mitchell Rock trail. Go about 0.4 miles to Mitchell Rock, a great place to make a momentary stop and check out the view.

Continue on another 1.3 miles after Mitchell Rock, right on past the Twin Peaks, until you connect with Eagle Peak Trail.

Go right on Eagle Peak Trail about 0.9 miles to Eagle Peak itself at 2,369'.

This gives you an elevation gain of about 1,700' and at just under 6 miles for the round trip if you return by the same route, a nice little morning workout.

Enjoy.
