Alamere FallsAlamere Falls is a 40' waterfall in Marin county that falls directly down to the beach and the Pacific Ocean.
It is one of only two here that drop directly to the Pacific Ocean, the other being McWay Falls in Big Sur. It's about an 8.5 mile walk from the parking lot through some wonderful countryside. There is a way down from right there above the falls, but I was afraid to try it. I didn't come out here to break a leg, after all. So, I walked about a mile and a half further up the trail to Wildcat camp and followed the beach back to the falls. I had to repeat this on the way back since I didn't feel comfortable climbing back up that ravine either. This turned my 9 mile trip into about a 15 mile trip, but at least I didn't have to be airlifted out or something. (Alamere Falls photos here.) |
Directions:Take Hwy 1 north from the Golden Gate Bridge.
Go past Stinson Beach, (17.5 miles) then past Bolinas Lagoon. At the end of Bolinas Lagoon turn left on Fairfax - Bolinas Road. Turn left again on Olema - Bolinas road. Go about 1.5 miles and turn right onto Mesa road. Go about 4.5 miles to the end and park at the Palomarin trailhead, parking for Alamere Falls. The Hike:Follow the trail signs to the waterfall.
There is a ravine here that you can go down to get to the bottom, but I wasn't feeling up to it that day. If you don't want to take a chance on getting injured you can still get to the bottom by walking 1.5 miles further to wildcat camp and returning down the beach. |
